Mira Nair born on 15th October 1957 in Rourkela, Odisha, India is an Indian American Filmmaker and Producer. Currently, she resides in New York City, New York, United States. Her parents are father Amrit Nair, who is an Indian Administrative Officer and mother Parveen Nayyar, she is a social worker. She did her schooling at Loreto Convent Tara Hall, Shimla, and did her graduation from Miranda House, University of Delhi, in Sociology. For further studies, she accepted the full scholarship to Harvard University. she met her first husband Mitch Epstein at Harvard University while taking photography classes, but unfortunately got divorced in 1987, then in 1988 she again fell in love with Mahmood Mamdani, who teaches at Columbia University, the couple has a son named Zohran, born in 1991. Nair has always been a yoga practitioner, and while shooting for a movie also she with her cast and crew starts her day with yoga.
Mira started her career as a Director with movie Jama Street Masjid Journal in 1979, and audiences were quite impressed with her creative mind. After this she directed her second film named as So Far From India in 1982, afterwards she kept on moving further and never looked back, her third movie was India Cabaret in 1985, in 1987 she directed her next movie named Children of a Desired Sex, her next movie Salaam Bombay in 1988, was a major hit and got many awards, the film was loved by critics as well as audiences. In 1991 her next venture was Mississipi Masala released in 1991, from 1993 to 2015 she directed over 17 movies which were – The Day the Mercedes Became a Hat, The Perez Family, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, My Own Country, Monsoon Wedding, Hysterical Blindness, 11’9’01 September 11, Still, The Children are Here, Vanity Fair, The Namesake, Migration…., New York, I Love You, 8, Amelia, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Words With Gods, The Bengali Detective. Her latest directed movie was Queen of Katwe released in 2016.
Mira Nair has been awarded many prestigious awards, in 2012 she was awarded the Padma Bhushan award, India’s third highest civilian award. Also, she has been awarded Golden Lion Award, National Film Award and many more.
