Manpreet Kaur is a 25-year-old Indian Shot Putter from Sahauli village in Patiala. She is trained by her husband Karamjeet Singh, a university level Shot Putter. She had the previous best of 16.39 at Delhi National Open. She is currently working for Diesel Locomotive Modernization which is a diesel engine manufacturing unit of the Indian Railways in Patiala. She participated in 2010 Commonwealth Games. After that, she took a break for three years due to her marriage and the birth of her daughter. The IAAF entry standard for 2016 Rio Olympics in women’s shot put was 17.80m. At the National Open Athletics Championships at the Sports Authority of India, East Centre in Kolkata, she was qualified for the marque event with a throw of 17.96 m and with this she broke an 18-year-old national record held by Harbans Kaur (17.43 meter) which was set in 1997. With the gold, she completed a hat-trick of gold medals at the National Open, finishing sixth overall. She became the second woman from Punjab to qualify for the Olympics after Khushbir Kaur who will also be representing India in the Women’s 20 km walk event. She also has an experience on the international stage. She finished 9th in the women's shot put even when she took part in the 5th IAAF World Youth Championships in 2007 at Ostrava in the Czech Republic, t. Some of her competitors are Michelle Carter of U.S, Valerie Adams of New Zealand and Anita Marton of hungry etc.
She failed to qualify for the final round of women’s shot put at the Rio Olympics 2016. Manpreet threw 16.68 metres in her first attempt and improved to 17.06 metres in her second attempt. She secured 16.76 metres in her third attempt at the Olympic Stadium and the task was to throw of 18.40 metres or at least the 12 best performers advanced to the final round and it was the qualifying mark for the 18 shot putters in Group B where she did well. But it was not enough to secure qualification to the final round in Rio Olympics 2016 as she was ranked 23rd after the overall completion of the qualification process.
With much hard work and the continuous support of her coach who is also her husband, she can become the most famous shot putter of the country. She has all the qualities to become a world-class athlete if she continues with her dedication towards the sport.
