Manickam B. Tagore started his political career as a member of The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Indian National Congress (INC or Congress). In 1994, he was appointed to the District General Secretary of NSUI, General Secretary of NSUI, Tamil Nadu in 1996, General Secretary of All India NSUI in 1997, Vice President of All India NSUI in 1999, General Secretary of Indian Youth Congress for 2003 and 2005, Chairman of Central Election Authority in 2006, and Election Commissioner of Indian Youth Congress in 2008.
