Shanmugam is a famous Indian politician of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Industrial Worker/Trade Unionist, Social Worker, and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), the upper house of the Indian Parliament from the state of Tamil Nadu. He was born on 7 May 1940 (age 81 years according to 2021) in Kumbakonam, Distt. Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu), India. His father’s name is Shri Muthukumarasamy and his mother’s name is Shrimati Sellammal. He did his schooling at Banadurai High School, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, and his educational qualification is S.S.L.C... His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, Indian. He is married to Shrimati S. Gomathi on 12 September 1981 and has one son. He has been traveled to Europe, Geneva (Switzerland), to attend the International Labour Conference.
M. Shanmugam started his career as an Industrial Worker/Trade Unionist and still working as a trade union leader. He has been General Secretary of Labour Progressive Federation and served in the government's Tripartite Labour Committees. He is a candidate of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In 2019, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the state of Tamil Nadu. Currently, he is serving as a member of the Committee on Labour, Textiles and Skill Development, a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Heavy Industries, member of the Committee on Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), member of Committee on Public Undertakings.
