His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, Indian. He married Smt. Kamalavathanam on 15 Jul 1984 and has two daughters. Muniyan Selvarasu started his political career as a candidate of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He was first elected to the 8th Lok Sabha from Nagapattinam constituency in 1984. After that, he was re-elected to the 11th Lok Sabha (2nd term) in 1996, 12th Lok Sabha (3rd term) in 1998, and 17th Lok Sabha (4th term) in 2019 from the same constituency with which he was made a member of the Standing Committee on Chemicals & Fertilisers and member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He is also a State Executive Member of CPI Tamilnadu. He is also part of social and cultural activities as he is against communal, caste atrocities, Rural poor get land and awareness to rural people inspire health, improve good economic saving, Struggle against illiteracy, educate the agriculture to improve the new method of agriculture.
