Hanumanthaiah is a famous Indian politician of the Indian National Congress, Dalit poet, Writer, Agriculturist, Social Worker, and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), the upper house of the Indian Parliament from the state of Karnataka. He was born on 10 June 1958 (age 63 years according to 2021) in Rameswara Village, Bangalore Rural (Karnataka), India. His father’s name is Late Shri Lankappa and his mother’s name is Late Shrimati Channamma. His educational qualification is M. B.Sc., M.A., Ph.D. from Government Science College, Bangalore, Post Graduate Studies in Kannada Literature at Bangalore University; Ph.D. from Mysore University. His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, Indian. He is married to Shrimati Vijayambaike H. on 22 June 1984 and has two children one son and one daughter.
L. Hanumanthaiah started his career as a Dalit poet, Writer. His first poetry is Kappu Kannina Hudugi (Black-eyed Girl) in 1990. He has been writing more than 10 poetry and worked on more than one Research Thesis. In 1995, he joined politics as a candidate for the Indian National Congress. He was first elected to the member of Karnataka Legislative Council for 2001-2007. After that in 2018, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the state of Karnataka and currently serving as a Member of the Committee on Health and Family Welfare, member of Governing Body of the Indian Council of Medical Research, member of the Committee on Petitions and member of General Purposes Committee.
He has also been honored with Visweswaraiah Puraskar (1988), Saranga Mutt Prize for Poetry (1995), Sahithya Parishat Endowment Prize for Poetry (1995), Ambedkar Award from Attimabbe Trust for social and literary (1999), Naadachetana Award (2000), Katharangam Award (2001), Sahitya Parishat Endowment Prize for Poetry (2001), Ambedkar Award of Govt. of Karnataka (2001), Sahithya Academy Award for best book of the year (2008), Sahithya Academy Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature (2015), Kuvempu Award for Literature and Social Work (2015).
