He was born on 16 November 1971 (age 49 years according to 2021) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His father’s name is P. Chidambaram (Member of Rajya Sabha) and his mother’s name is Nalini Chidambaram. Karti Chidambaram was born into a political family. His educational qualification is Bachelor of Business Administration from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin in 1993 and Bachelor of Laws from Wolfson College, Cambridge in 1995. His religion belongs to Hinduism and nationality, Indian. He married Srinidhi Rangarajan (a Bharathanatyam dancer and physician) and has one daughter named Aditi Nalini Chidambaram.

After that, he joined his father’s political party called the Congress Jananayaka Peravai where he worked as a P Chidambaram's election manager in Sivaganga. Currently, he is appointed as a Vice-President for the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association, President of the Tenpin Bowling Federation of India, and Chief Patron of the All India Karate-Do Federation, member of the inaugural class of the India Leadership Initiative (ILI) of the Aspen Institute.
