Karan Johar also known as KJo was born on 25th May 1972 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India to parents Yash Johar and Hiroo Johar. Karan is an all-rounder he is an Indian Actor, Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Costume designer, Television Host and much more. KJo is known for providing wholesome entertainment movies. His Dharma Productions is every new actors and actress dream to work. Karan did his schooling at Greenlawns High School and did his graduation from H. R. College of Commerce and Economics. He has also earned a master’s degree in French. Karan made his debut as a child artist in 1989 for Doordarshan’s serial Indradhanush.
From childhood, he idolized Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra and Sooraj R. Barjatya. Earlier his every movie title used to start with alphabet “K” due to some numerology, but when he watched Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006, which was critical of numerology, he stopped this practice. Through surrogacy, Johar became a proud father of two children, son Yash and daughter Roohi, named after his father’s and mother’s names. He stepped in Bollywood as an Assistant Director for movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Finally he made his debut as a Director with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee in 1998, which is a landmark in Hindi Cinema, he redefined the meaning of love, the movie won 8 Filmfare Awards and also a National Film Award for Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment.
With his first movie, he gained the appreciation and recognition in Indian Cinema, his next big venture was Multistarrer family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001, starring legendary Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan, again his movie won everyone hearts and also impressed the critics with his direction skills, his movie again won 5 Filmfare Awards. Karan was setting benchmark with his every movie, audiences loved to watch his films and eagerly wait for his movies. His third movie was Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in 2006, again Johar impressed every critic and audience with his movie.
Karan knows what people want to watch and how to give them a good content to watch and hold the audiences towards his movies. His movie My Name Is Khan in 2010, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol was able to connect emotionally with people and became a grand success, it won 3 Filmfare Awards as well as audiences love towards him. Karan launched 3 new actors Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan with his youth-centric movie Student Of The Year, the movie got mixed reviews and did a good business. In 2013 Karan with Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee did a movie named Bombay Talkies, the film was not able to create the magic as his previous movies.
In 2016 his commercial success was movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. As a producer Johar has produced over 29 films like Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kaal, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Dostana, Kurbaan, Wake Up Sid, My Name Is Khan, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Hasee Toh Phasee, 2 States, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Ungli, All India Bakchod Knockout, Brothers, Shaandaar, Kapoor & Sons, Baar Baar Dekho, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Dear Zindagi, Ok Jaanu, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Ittefaqa and many more, as producer his upcoming movies are Drive, Raazi, Kesari and Brahmastra.
As an Actor Karan has worked in 4 movies, he did cameo roles in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Om Shanti Om, Fashion and Luck By Chance. He made his full-fledged acting debut in movie Bombay Velvet. Also, he has worked as a Costume Designer for his dear friend Shah Rukh Khan in movies, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Duplicate, Mohabbatein, Main Hoon Na, Veer Zaara and Om Shanti Om. Karan has been loved as a Television host as well, his show Koffee With Karan, a celebrity based Talk Show, as a judge in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and India’s Got Talent.
