Kamlesh Paswan started his political career as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party. He was first elected to Member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Maniram (Vidhan Sabha constituency) for 2002-2007 with which he became a member of the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment. After that in 2009, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party. In the same year, he contested and won the seat of the 15th Lok Sabha from the Bansgaon constituency. He was re-elected to the 16th Lok Sabha (2nd term) in 2014 and 17th Lok Sabha (3rd term) in 2019 from the same constituency. Currently, he is serving as a member of the Committee on Estimates, a member of the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, and a member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
