Joydeep Karmakar is a famous Indian rifle-prone shooter. He was born on 7 December 1979 (age 41 according to 2021) in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. His father’s name is Santa Karmakar (a three-time national swimming champion) and his mother’s name is Gayatri Karmakar. His religion belongs to Hinduism and nationality, Indian. His height is 177cm, 1.77m, 5 feet, and 10 inches and his weight is 73kg, in pounds 161lbs. He did his graduation from Seth Anandram Jaipuria College. Joydeep Karmakar is counted in one of the youngest athletes lists of India. In 1989, he started in rifle-prone shooting and played at many championships. He made his wonderful debut at the international level as he became a Junior National Champion in 1994 in his first attempt. In 2010, Joydeep Karmakar became the first and the only Indian athlete to earn a silver medal at the World Cup in the 50-meter prone event in Sydney. Apart from his 50 National Medals, he also earned SAF double Gold, Individual Australian Open Cup, and Commonwealth Championships Pairs Gold. He was of the well knows Indian shooters, who represented India at the 2012 Summer Olympics in Men’s 50m Rifle Prone event. He is the only Indian to earn a silver medal at the World Cup Prone. He has been part of the world cup, Munich, and finished with 69 ranks and was part of ASG, Incheon in which he finished with rank 35 in 2014. The athlete is also an author of his own book named ‘My Olympic Journey’, documenting his sore fourth in the London Games. Karmakar has competed in a total of 28 World Cups. He has also been awarded the Arjuna Award for his sporting excellence and West Bengal Khel Samman Award in 2013–14. He set up a Shooting Academy in Kolkata namely Joydeep Karmakar Shooting Academy in the New Town region in Kolkata, where he along with many other international shooters train newcomers to the world of Rifle Shooting.
