Himanta Biswa Sarma entered into politics as a Congress leader. He was an MLA from the Jalukbari constituency in Assam from 2001 till 2015 from the Indian National Congress ticket. Dr. Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in August 2015. He continued the winning spree. Elected MLA from same Jalukbari constituency of Assam. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam on May 10, 2021. He won the Jalukbari constituency for the fourth consecutive term. He was sworn in as Cabinet Minister on 24 May 2016. The leader has been allotted portfolios like Finance, Health & Family Welfare, Education, Planning & Development, Tourism, Pension & Public Grievan. In the year 2015 saw a turn in the career of Dr. Sarma as the Congress leader decided to quit the party and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August. Dr. Sarma resigned from all portfolios of the Congress party on 21 July 2014 after political differences with former chief minister Tarun Gogoi. He was also practicing law at Gauhati High Court from 1996 to 2001.
