Gurmeet Singh also known as mountain man is an Indian athlete who competes in the 20 kilometres race walk event. He is born on July 1, 1985, in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand state. For choosing athletics, he considered his cousin Surjit Singh, his inspiration who is also a discus thrower. Gurmeet Singh is married to Deepmala Devi a Manipuri girl who is also a 20 km walker. He won a silver medal at the national junior championships in 2000. He secured the fifth position in the 2001 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Brunei. In late 2010 he started his training at Sports Authority of India, Bangalore centre under the coach Ramakrishnan Gandhi. He had set a record as in Indian in the 20 km race walk the Indian Grand Prix I in Patiala in May 2011. He walked a time of 1 hour 21 minutes and 31 seconds at the Asian Championships in Nomi, Japan in March 2012. In March 2016 he clinched a gold medal in the Asian 20 km race walk championship finishing 1 hour 20 minutes and 29 seconds. In 34 years it was the first time that an Indian won a gold medal in either an Asian championship or Asian Games event.
In 2012 Summer Olympics he became one of the three Indian athletes who qualified for the in 20 km race walk event with an ‘A’ qualification standard after a 1:22:30 walk. In the event, he walked with a time of 1:23:34 and finished 33rd. He achieved this berth in the 18th Dublin International Grand Prix in Ireland after finishing sixth with a time of 1:22:05.
Gurmeet qualified for Rio Olympics after a walk of 1 hour 21 minutes and 24 seconds. Wang Zhen, Cai Zelin, Dane Bird-Smith are some of the top athletes who competed against Gurmeet. The qualification mark was set at 1 hour and 24 minutes. Gurmeet Singh was disqualified in Rio Olympics 2016 when he had not even reached the 6-kilometre mark. He was given three warnings, two for loss of contact and a third for a bent knee leading to the disqualification. He had completed 2 km in 8 minutes and 25 seconds and 4 km at 17 minutes and 26 seconds and was ranked 72 after 4 km.
