Ghulam Nabi Azad is an Indian political personality. He was born on March 7, 1949 (age 72 years), in Village Soti, Bhadarwah, Distt. Doda (Jammu & Kashmir) India. He was educated at Govt. Gandhi Memorial Science College Jammu (1970), University of Kashmir, University Of Jammu. His father’s name is Shri Rahmatullah and his mother’s name is Shrimati Basa Begum. Ghulam Nabi Azad entered the political fray as the secretary for the Block Congress Committee in Bhalessa in 1973. He trudged up the ranks and was subsequently appointed President of the youth congress. He won his first parliamentary elections in 1980 from the Washim constituency in Maharashtra. He was inducted into the cabinet as a union minister in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs in1982. Ghulam Nabi Azad is well-known for his organizational skills. He holds the enviable record of being the AICC General Secretary nine times. He has been a member of the Congress Working Committee for over 18 years, which is close to the longest period served by any other party leader. In 2015, He was re-elected to Rajya Sabha for a fifth term. He was elected to Rajya Sabha for a fourth term and subsequently appointed as Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare in 2009. In 2008, he Re-elected to Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Bhaderwah by defeating Daya Krishan with a margin of 29436 votes.
