His educational qualification is B.Sc., B.L. from First Grade College, Tumkur and Vidyodaya Law College, Tumkur, Karnataka. His religion belongs to Hinduism and nationality, Indian. He married S. Shakunthala on 07 Jul 1972 and has 2 sons. He has been widely traveled to France, Germany, Singapore, U.K., and U.S.S.R. He loves to do Gardening, reading, and meditation.
Gangasandra Siddappa Basavaraj started his political career with Congress and was appointed as a President of the District Congress Committee, Tumkur, Karnataka from 1979-1983. After that, he was first elected to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984. At the same time, he was also a member of Consultative Committee, External Affairs for the year 1985-89, Member of Committee on Subordinate Legislation for the year 1987-89. In 1989, he was re-elected to 9th Lok Sabha (2nd term) and maintained his position in parliament for 13th, 15th, and 17th Lok Sabha (5th term). He joined BJP in 2014. He was made a member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Water Resources in 1990, member of Committee on Human Resource Development in 1999, Member of Standing Committee on Commerce, and member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Water Resources in 2009. He did some extra Social And Cultural Activities as well as he is actively involved in social and educational activities, cooperative movement, running of professional education institutions for the rural poor and Harijans, Charitable and philanthropic activities. He is also Chairman of Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee, Tumkur, 1970-79, Vice President of Coconut Board, Cochin, 1986-88, and member of National Shipping Board, 1990. Currently, he is a member of the Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution and a member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Jal Shakti since 2019.
