He was born on 1 July 1953 (age 68 years according to 2021) in Elamaram, Distt. Malappuram (Kerala), India. His father’s name is Shri Ismalutty and his mother’s name is Shrimati Amina. His educational qualification is Pre-University from St. Joseph's College, Devagiri, Kozhikode. His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, Indian. He is married to Shrimati Rahmath P.K. on 12 May 1979 and has two daughters named Sumi, Nimi.
Elamaram Kareem started his political career as a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly represented the Beypore constituency in Kozhikode district for three terms (1996-2001, 2006-2011, and 2011-2016). In between, he was appointed to the Minister for Industries, Government of Kerala for 2006-2011. In 2018, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and served as a member of the Committee on Labour, Textiles and Skill Development, member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Heavy Industries, member of General Purposes Committee, and member of Business Advisory Committee. He is also a National Secretary and Kerala State General Secretary of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) of State of Kerala since 2011, Member of Central Committee CPI (M) since 2015, and Rajya Sabha leader of CPI (M) since 2020.
