Pasting a short pitch: South China Sea imbroglio: Likely clash can be avoided! In fact, the prevailing tensions over South China Sea are due to China’s continuing imperialist-militarist aggressions in the Asia-Pacific as Beijing has long been involved in territorial disputes with almost all of its neighboring littoral states in the region waters, including India. It is having tensions with powerful regional navies like Japan, Australia and also with America. In Southeast Asia, China is already engaged in several disputes over sovereignty of islands in South China Sea. It has disputes with Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia over the control of many islands and reefs as well. Carrying its jingoism onwards Beijing, in the recent past, had extended its sovereign claim over entire South China Sea as its maritime territory, while citing some historical evidences of its choice. But that claim was rejected by a five member panel from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands on July 12, 2016, while deciding on Philippines’ complaint lodged in 2013 for arbitration on grounds of alleged Chinese infringement into Manila’s Exclusive Economic Zone, under clauses of violation of the United Nations Treaty governing “Laws of the Sea”, to which China is also a signatory. Unfortunately, this legal defeat has made Beijing more aggressive and irresponsible as it has jumped to encircle the region by its fierce naval power. With this objective in hand, China has raised its naval presence in the region by increasing its naval-warships, submarines and aerial support with regular naval exercises and has also created many artificial reefs in the sea, housing logistical support base for to its patrolling navy. Though the US Secretary of State John Kerry, in his just concluded visit to India, appealed to both Philippines and China to abide by the ruling of International arbitration with a view to diffuse tensions between them but Washington has all-along been monitoring China’s highhandedness in the region since the long past. It has its precious economic stakes in this region, particularly carrying over its strategic relations with most of the Southeast Asian countries. Further, it has to ensure safe and uninterrupted passage of maritime trade and commerce passing through different sea-lanes in the Indo-Pacific region, connecting East Asia with West Asia and beyond to Africa. As America is aware that future of the world politics lies in the East because global geopolitics is said to be moving towards East from its traditional Euro-Atlantic centre of power after two and a half century, it did conclude a significant military agreement with Australia in 2011, following its “Asia-Pivot” policy, having a covert agenda to contain China’s imperialist aggressions with a view to provide an effective security cover in the region and also to re-establish that the US is still a global power and maintains its dominance and hegemony all over the world, against a likely projected scenario of China replacing the US hegemony by the end of mid-21st century. A scholar, Martin Jacques has also predicted in his book When China Rules the World, that China would surpass the US and would become a dominant global leader with none to challenge its hegemony. Obviously, the US is to washout its sagging global image and that has motivated Washington to intervene militarily, if any armed clash over South China Sea takes place. Obviously, if armed clashes begin, it may result into a major regional war including powerful regional navies, like Australia, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian and South Asian states, besides the US led NATO allies. Its further advancement will, ultimately, result into Third World War, which in all likelihood will be a nuclear holocaust upon the earth, as all likely belligerents are nuclear powers. Against this backdrop, while Beijing and Manila must abide by the decision of the Hague Arbitration and the US must also observe restraint, they together must seek a diplomatic solution with the help of the United Nations representing global aspirations against war. But if Beijing persists with its rejected claims over South China Sea, it can be diplomatically isolated by imposing severe restrictions and also by suspending and finally terminating its permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council and all other agencies of the global body by the United Nations General Assembly. The UNGA can also invoke its “Uniting for Peace Resolution”, against China’s obstinacy. Again China may be expelled from all meaningful international forums and its nuclear programme may be got checked like that of Iran in the past. Again Australia, Japan and India, together, can play a meaningful role in resolving the imminent crisis as they are powerful navies in the region. Being a founder member of Non-Aligned Movement and also enjoying considerable clout in the region, India can significantly contribute towards establishing peace in the region. Further they can help-evolve a fresh global consensus against war which China may find hard to ignore and, thus the imminent showdown may be stalled. Dr. Sudhanshu Tripathi Asso. I've been subscribing to DNA for the last four years and I have all praises for the paper. The articles are indeed highly rewarding ,say, an eye opener. The thought provoking articles published on Sundays and on other days are of high quality. But I'm missing all those as it was Aug 6,'17 when I last received the copy of the esteemed paper. Since then I am going without DNA. The news agent says there is no supply from Jaipur. I'm not sure how far it is correct. You are requested to look into matter n do the needful. Thanks
