In March, 2009 with the appointment and joining of Prof. Abdul Wahid Quershi, the Central University of Kashmir was come in to existence. Central University of Kashmir was formerly known as the Central University of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2009, the Government of India under the Central Universities Act (Section 25 of 2009) via an Act of Parliament established the Central University Kashmir. The Central University of Kashmir is located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The Central University of Kashmir is also in the list of 13 newly established central universities which are established by the Government of India under the Central Universities Act, 2009.  The aim of the university is to find out young talent from the J&K and endow them appropriate environment of education. The motto of the University is “Knowledge is Power”. The university is recognized by University Grant Commission (UGC). Currently, the university is operating from its transit campus which is located in Srinagar district of Jammu & Kashmir. The Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir is Shri. Srikumar Banerjee. He is also the renowned nuclear scientist. The Vice-Chancellor of the University is Prof. Abdul Wahid.

The Central University of Kashmir offers postgraduates programmes to the students. Some of the courses offered by the university are Integrated BA LLB (5 years), M.Sc. (Information Technology and Mathematics), M.A. (in English, Urdu, Tourism Management, Convergent Journalism, Mathematics, Economics, Education and Politics) and Master of Tourism Management (MTM). The facilities which are being provided by the university to the students are Library, Medical Aid Facility, Hostel Facility, Transport Facility, Browsing Center and Canteen.
