Birendra Lakra is an Indian field hockey player. Since the year 2020, he is the vice-captain of the Indian Team. He was born on 3 February 1990 in district Sundargarh, Odisha, India. His height is 5 feet and 6 inches. He was born to a family belonging to an Oraon tribe. He started playing at the SAIL Hockey Academy in Rourkela, Birendra Lakra grew up idolizing former India and Odisha fullback Dilip Tirkey. It’s hardly a surprise that likes his idol. He also played a key role in taking India into the semi-finals of the 2012 Hockey Champions Trophy. He was bagged by the Ranchi franchise for the 2013 edition of the Hockey India League and played a pivotal role in its title triumphs in 2013 and again in 2015.
An ACL injury in 2016 which started as a ligament tear in the right knee in 2015 led to Birendra Lakra being ruled out of the Olympic Games which was held in 2016. He missed most of the significant tournaments in 2017. This was a big blow to his career, he also suffered a minor halt in his career due to the aforementioned injury. He has many awards and achievements to his credit since 2014 he won the gold medal at the Asian Games and the silver medal at Commonwealth Games. In 2015 bronze medal finish for India in the World League Final.
