Aparupa Poddar was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha after defeating Saktimohan Malik of CPM from the Arambagh constituency in 2014. She was a member of the Standing Committee on Water Resources in 2014. She was a member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Tourism and Culture in 2014. Aparupa fell into trouble when she changes her name to Afrin Ali. BJP alleged that after changing her name she has no right to continue as MLA on Arambagh because it belongs to Scheduled Caste. The later row was over after Afrin declared that she has changed her name not the religion in 2014. She won the Indian general election, 2014 as an All-India Trinamool Congress candidate.
