The youngest child of teacher Harnett Sharma and Mithlesh Sharma, Ankit Sharma is an Indian athlete who competes in the long jump event. He holds the long jump record 8.19 metres set in June 2016 at the G. Kosanov Memorial Meet in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Ankit always wanted to become a cricketer but due to lack of facilities in Morena, he couldn’t choose that profession. He was 8 when he started practising javelin throw. When his instructors saw him jumping up with joy at each successful throw, they suggested him to go for the long jump. Once in a Raksha Bandhan celebrations in Morena, he took part in long jump events which and later on, with his parent’s suggestion, he decided to pursue a career in the long jump. He also used to play volleyball, triple jump, discus throw and hurdles in his childhood. In 2006, Sharma was selected to represent Sports Authority of India, Bhopal, when he crossed the 6-metre mark at the age of 13. He was trained by Nishad Kumar since 2009 and Romanian coach Bedros Bedrosian since 2015.The player competed in 2014 Commonwealth Games but unable to win a medal. In 2015, he became the fifth Indian to go past the 8-metre mark recorded a jump of 8.04 metres at the National Games. He won the gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games with a jump of 7.89 metres.
