Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is a famous Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), Social Reformer, Politician, and Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Baharampur Constituency. He was born on 2 April 1956 (age 65 years according to 2021) in Behrampore, West Bengal, India. His father’s name is Late Shri Niranjan Chowdhury and his mother’s name is Late Smt. Saraju Bala Chowdhury. His educational qualification is Matriculate, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letter from Iswar Chandra Vidyalaya and Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management Research. His religion belongs to Hinduism and Nationality, Indian. He married Arpita Chowdhury (married-1987 & died- 2019) and Atasi Chattopadhyaya Chowdhury in 2019. He has two children. He has keenly interested in the environment and new paradigms of environmental science, always eager to work for creating awareness about preserving the ecological balance in order to protect the environment and to make the earth a better place to live.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury started his political career as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Nabagram constituency for 1996-99. He was elected 13th Lok Sabha from Berhampore constituency and became a member of the Committee to Review the Rate of Dividend Payable by the Railway Undertaking to the General Revenues, Railway Convention Committee, Standing Committee on Information Technology, Standing Committee on Railways and Consultative Committee, Ministry of External Affairs. After that, he was re-elected to 14th Lok Sabha (2nd term), 15th Lok Sabha (3rd term), 16th Lok Sabha (4th term), and 17th Lok Sabha (5th term). In between, he has been Union Minister of State, Railways and became the president of West Bengal Pradesh Congress in 2014. In 2019, he was selected as Leader of the Indian National Congress in Lok Sabha and also elected as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee. Currently, he is serving as a Chairperson of Committee on Public Accounts, member of Standing Committee on Home Affairs, member of General Purposes Committee, Lok Sabha, and member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Defence.
