He did his schooling from Vikas Vidyalaya in Ranchi. He graduated from Allahabad University and then went to the United States for higher studies. He attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook and there he developed his interest in acting.He acted in many plays. He started doing theater roles after returning to India. He also started writing dialogues.
Pathak started his career in Bollywood in 1998 with Bombay Boys. In the same year, he appeared in Fire. In 1999, he made his debut on television with Hip Hip Hurray. The show was one of the most successful shows for youth and Vinay’s role as an English teacher was very much appreciated. He was spotted by Channel V while he was auditioning for TV shows and anchoring on channels and the channel offered him OYE. He was the anchor of the show along with Ranvir Shorey. The duo was also the host of the talk show Ranvir Vinay Aur Kaun?. They also co-hosted the shows House Arrest and Duniya Goal Hain. He gained recognition with comic show Kahani Poori Filmi Hain.
Along with Tv shows, Pathak appeared in small roles in well-known movies like HarDil Jo PyarKarega (2000), Jism (2003), Murder Unveiled (2005), Aaja Nachle (2007), Via Darjeeling (2008), My Name Is Khan (2010), Badlapur (2015), etc. Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006) established him as a comic caper. His performance achieved him a lot of appreciation. He worked in Bheja Fry in 2007 along with Rajat Kapoor. The movie received positive reviews from both critics and public and proved to be a box office success. He also played critically acclaimed roles in Johnny Gaddar and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. His role in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award. He was seen in the film Antardwand in 2010 which won National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues. He has done more than 40 movies in his career and still counting. Vir Das, Ranvir Shorey, and Rajat Kapoor are his competitors in the film industry.
