Upendra took birth on 18th September 1968 in Kundapur, Karnataka. Rao started his career under the guidance of actor & film director Kashinath and worked as a writer and assistance director. Upendra directed his first film Tharle Nan Maga which was released in 1992.
Upendra Rao was born to Manjunath Rao and Anusuya to a poor family. Rao suffered from eye problem and still facing the same problem. Rao completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree from APS college of Commerce located in Bangalore. During his college days, he used to participate in plays and drama. Kashinath is his distant relative and Upendra association with Kashinath began during his final year of study.
Upendra began his career as a director with Tharle Nan Maga comedy style film. The movie went on to be a hit. After that Rao directed horror suspense Shh! which was released in 1993. After that, the director didn't look back and gave several hits.
