Tabassum Fatima Hashmi is an Indian actress who born on 4th November 1971. She was born in Hyderabad Telangana. She belongs to a Muslim family. After her birth, her parents were divorced. Her mother Rizwana was a school teacher. Tabu did her schooling from St. Anns High School, Hyderabad. In 1983, she moved to Mumbai. She studied there for two years in St. Xavier College. Tabu is a fluent speaker in Telugu, Urdu, Hindi, and English. Shabana Azmi, Tanvi Azmi and Baba Azmi is maternal uncle and aunt of Tabu and she is a younger sister of Farah Naaz.
Tabu started her career to play a short role in the film Bazaar (1980). She did her first film as an actress Coolie No. 1(1987) in Telugu. She released her first Bollywood film Pehla Pehla Pyar, but it was a flop at that time. Then, she appeared in the film Vijaypath (1994) alongside Ajay Devgan. By this film, she won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. In the year 1996, she released eight films with two hits Saajan Chale Sasural and Jeet. Both were in the top five films of the year. Then she appeared in the film Maachis where she played a role of Punjabi women and she won her first National Film Award for her Best Actress. Then she played a role in Telugu film Ninne Pelladata alongside Nagarjuna and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. She also worked in Kollywood Tamil film Kadhal Desam which was directed by Kathir. Her first release of 1997 was Border. She played the role of Sunny Deol’s wife. In the film, she played the small role but that time the film was the biggest hit of 1997.
In the year 1999, she acted in two blockbuster films Biwi No. 1 and Hum Sath Sath Hai. Both films were the biggest hit of the year. Then she appeared in Hera Pheri and Astitva (2000). By this film, she won her third Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. In 2001, she acted in the film Chandni Bar directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and won her second National Film Award for Best Actress. She acted in several Telugu films, many of them very successful. After that, she played a supporting role in the film Fanaa with Aamir Khan and Kajol.
Tabu made her debut film in Hollywood ‘The Namesake’ which was directed by Mira Nair. The film was a big hit overseas. She also acted in the film Cheeni Kum with Amitabh Bachchan. In 2010, she played a lead character in the film ‘Toh Baat Pakki!’ by which she got huge publicity in the Bollywood after three years. Her next release of the year was Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai which was directed by B.R. Chopra. In the year 2012, she made her second Hollywood film Life of Pi directed by Ang Lee. Then she appeared in the film ‘Jai Ho’ with Salman Khan. She played a role of sister of Salman Khan that was a failure at the box office. Later, she acted in Shakespear’s Hamlet named Haider. In which she played a role of Shahid’s character. In the year 2017, she appeared in the fourth franchise of Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again.
