Shyam Benegal born on 14^th December 1934 in Trimualagiri, Hyderabad State, British India. By profession, he is a Film Director, Screenwriter. At the age of 12 years, he made his first appearance on camera. He did his graduation in M.A. Economics from Osmania University, Hyderabad. Benegal is married to Nira Benegal, and the daughter Pia. Shyam made his directorial debut with movie Ankur in 1974, it was the official Indian entry to the Oscars, National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film, in 1975 his second movie was Charandas Chor. In 1975 he directed his third film Nishant and nominated for Palme d'Or, National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, in 1976 he did his fourth movie Manthan, from 1977 to 1987 he did 9 movies which are Bhumika, Kondura, Junoon, Anugraham, Kalyug, Arohan, Mandi, Trikaal, Susman. In 1991 his next release was Antarnaad. from 1993 to 2010 he directed over 11 movies, all his movies won National Awards in different categories. Shyam has also directed many Short films like Gher Betha Ganga in 1962, Poovanam in 1969, Flower Garden in 1969 and Hero in 1975. Also, he made his television debut with a show named Yatra on Doordarshan, then he did second show named Katha Sagar, then in 1988, the show named was Bharat Ek Khoj, Amravati Ki Kahaniyan and Samvidhaan. Benegal has been honored with many prestigious awards like in 2005 he was awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his overall contribution to the Indian Cinema, for movie Well Done Abba he won National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues, for movie Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero he was honored with Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, after this he was awarded National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film, for movie Nishant he was awarded National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, for his movie Manthan he got National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, for movie Bhumika : The Role, he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Screenplay, and for movies Junoon and Arohan, he was awarded National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and many more. In 1976 he was honoured with Padma Shri Award, in 1991 with Padma Bhushan and for the year 2013, he got ANR National Award.
