Mohammad Anas Yahiya is an athlete of Indian Navy born on September 17, 1994, in Nilamel in Kerala. He specialises in 400 metres event. He qualified for two events at the 2016 Summer Olympics which are: the 400 metres and the 4 × 400 metres relay. He broke the national record in 400 metres at the Polish Athletics Championship at Bydgoszcz in Poland in June 2016 which clocked 45.40 seconds and is the exact qualification mark for the Olympics. He became the third Indian male athlete to have qualified for the 400m event at the Olympics, after the legendary Milkha Singh (1956 and 1960) and K. M. Binu (2004). He ranked 31 in men’s 400 m Round 1 and clocked 45.95 seconds and got disqualified in men’s 4x400 metre relay Round 1. His competitors in Olympics were Kirani James, Rusheen McDonald and Chris Brown. Anas, son of Sheena and the late Yahiya, did his schooling at Nilamel MMHS School, Kollam and Mar Basil School, Kothamangalam. He later joined Sree Krishna College at Guruvayur. He won the Calicut University Championship twice and won the silver medal in the Indian University Championship 2014. He was a part of the 4x400 m relay squad of Kerala that won the silver medal in the National Games held in February 2015, where he was picked up by the talent scouting team of the Indian Navy. He joined Indian Navy on May 7, 2015, and was trained under the guidance of a former international athlete, T G Ajesh who was his coach. He won the silver medal in the 400-metre event in his maiden Inter-services Championship held in Hyderabad in July 2015 and bagged silver medal in his first Senior National Athletics Championship held in Kolkata in September 2015. For the first time in the Indian Grand Prix and the Federation Cup events held in New Delhi in April 2016, he improved his timing to below 46 seconds. He is at the National Camp placed under Coach Muhammad Kunhi, a former champion of Services (400 m) and national coach.
The quartet of Anas, Kunhu Mohammed, AyyasamyDharun and Arokia Rajiv clocked 3:00:91, breaking their own national record and making them jump to 13th place in the world rankings. Anas is making India proud with his determination and hard work. Having won many medals in Indian championships till now, he, unfortunately, failed to bag any medal in the Rio Olympics this year but there are many more events to come in his way.
