Manish Singh studies in a government school, he didn’t learn race walking till 8th standard. For practising cricket, he used to walk 7 km up and 7 km down, that’s when he decided to take up race walking as his sport. Manish Singh used to get up at 4 a.m. daily to start his training. Some of the people from his village used to laugh at him seeing his style of walking as they had no knowledge of the sport. But they didn’t know that the guy they are laughing at will make them proud.
His father died when he was in 10th standard. More than the school he used to work in different places as a farmer, labour, tourist guide etc. He didn’t have enough money for the proper training. Instead of practising on tracks, he practised in the foothills of the Himalayas; instead of wearing aerodynamic shoes, he wore torn shoes from the local market, but nothing could stop his dedication towards the sport. He competed in the 50 kilometres walk event at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China. He also completed his 20 km race in 1 hour 20 minutes and 50 seconds at the IAAF Race Walking challenge in April 2015.
A day before the Rio event he even injured his knee, instead of complaining he increased his repetitions so that pain could not be felt. Just because of his pure hard work and stamina in Rio, he defeated four former world champions, three Asian champions, two European champions and two Olympic medalists to finish 13th. Christopher Linke from Germany, Tom Bosworth from Britain, Matteo Giupponi from Italy, Caio Bonfim from Brazil etc. were some of his competitors.
