Jitan Ram Manjhi was born on 6 October, 1944 to Ramjet Ram Manjhi and Sukri Devi. He is a native of Mahakar Village in Gaya district. He belongs to a farmer family. He is graduated from Gaya College in 1967 and had worked in telephone exchange before coming to politics. He belongs to a backward Mushar Caste which makes him a prominent Dalit figure.
He served as 23rd Chief Minister of Bihar State from 20 May 2014 to 20 Feb2015. He is a prominent personality of Indian politics. He was a part of Nitish Kumar's cabinet also, where he served as Minister for Schedule Tribe and Schedule Caste. In 1980, he entered into politics with the ticket from Indian National Congress. He stood from Fatehpur segment in Gaya district and won the seat. He subsequently won from same the constituency in 1985 but lost in 1990. Between the period of 1980 and 1990, he was in charge and was serving as the Minister in Successive Cabinet of Indian National Congress. After getting defeated in the election and losing the seat to the opposition, he immediately shook hands with Janta Dal in 1990. In 1996, when Lalu Prasad Yadav split the Janta Dal and form Rashtriya janta dal, Manjhi joined hands with RJD and won from Barachatti's seat in 1996. For the year 2000 also, he contested from the same seat on the ticket of RJD and won.
In October, 2005 RJD lost to BJP and JDU and Manjhi switched to Janta Dal United (JDU). He won from Barachatti district but the very next day, he was asked for the resignation as he was involved in a corruption case. He was accused with the involvement in fake B.ED degree racket in Bihar. But later in 2008, he was again introduced in the government by Nitish Kumar. In 2010, he was nominated for Makhdumpur district .In 2015, contested from Gaya district but face defeat. In 2014, when Nitish resigned from JDU, Manjhi replaced him and sworn as 23rd Chief Minister of Bihar. During this period of time, many allegations were put by opposition party and media on him. But after 10 months, his party asked him to resign to open a way for Nitish kumar. But he refused to do and expelled from the party resulting in political instability in state. He was expelled from JDU on 9 February 2015. In February 2015, he establishes “Hindustani Awam Morcha” with BJP to give a new political upfront to Bihar legislative assembly elections.
