Huma Qureshi is an actor cum model in the Indian Film Industry. She was born into a Muslim family in New Delhi on 28th July 1986. Huma’s father, Mr Saleem Qureshi, runs a chain of about 10 restaurants across Delhi. Her mother, Ameena Qureshi, is from Kashmir and is a housewife. She has three siblings, all brothers and one of her brothers’, Saqib Saleem is also a well-recognized actor cum model.
Qureshi did her schooling and graduation from Delhi. Later. she undertook Bachelors in History honours from Gargi College of Delhi University. Before getting committed to the Film Industry, Huma Qureshi worked with a number of NGOs and also assisted a documentary filmmaker. Then she joined Act 1 Theatre Group where her then mentor and acting teacher, N.K. Sharma made her believe that she can act. In fact, she learnt the initials of acting from him only.
In 2008, after having worked with several theatrical productions, Qureshi moved to Mumbai for auditions of film roles. She initially was for signed Billa-II, a Tamil gangster-thriller, as the female lead out of 700 candidates. But because of the delay in the film, she left the project as she had to serve other work commitments which included a two-year contract with Hindustan Unilever for appearing in their television commercials. With the contract, Huma got to work with veteran actors Amir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan for Samsung Mobile and Nerolac respectively.
During the shoot of one of the commercials, director Anurag Kashyap gave her her first big break in the Film Industry by signing her for the three-film deal with his company Anurag Kashyap Films. She made her debut with the same director in a supporting role. Her debut movie, Gangs of Wasseypur- Part 1 (2012) where she played the role of Mohsina opposite Faisal character played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the supportive wife of a criminal and the one who thinks she is the prettiest in her village, was largely acclaimed by the critics. Not only the movie but also her performance was appreciated by the audience and the critics largely.
In the same year, she was at third position (highest female position) on Rediff.com’s annual list of “Bollywood’s Top Ten Debutants” (male and female). Following the contract and the success of her debut, she was all geared up for the Part 2 of Gangs of Wasseypur later that year. For Anurag Kashyap’s two-part crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur, Huma was widely recognized and her performance was applauded by several critics. For the same, she earned various Best Female Debut and Best Supporting Actress Awards and nominations including the Filmfare Awards. Later in the same year, Qureshi completed her three-film contract with Anurag Kashyap by appearing as Harman, the feisty Punjabi girl, in the romantic comedy, “Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana”. Her performance was well acclaimed and the movie was a financial success.
In 2013, Huma Qureshi was seen as the witch in the supernatural thriller, Ek Thi Daayan, starring Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin. Her other award-winning performances include Abhishek Chaubey’s black comedy “Dedh Ishqiya” alongside Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah and Sriram Raghvan’s crime thriller Badlapur where she was starred opposite Varun Dhawan. She was also seen in movies like Highway (2016), Jolly LLB 2 (2017). She made her debut in the Malayalam film Industry in 2016 with “White”. Along with she was featured in the English Film “Viceroy’s House” as Aalia. Her latest release is the Tamil language film “Kaala” where she has performed opposite Rajinikanth.
