Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute is a post-graduate institute of Archeology and Linguistics. Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute is located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. The College was established on 6^th October 1821 and named as Hindoo College by Mountstuart Elephantine, the enlightened Governor of Bombay Presidency. In the year 1842, an English School was added to the College. To form the Poona College, English School was merged with the Hindoo College on 7^th June 1851. On October 15 1864, the foundation stone of the main building was laid and Bombay Government donated the land for the campus. At this stage the College was renamed as Deccan College. The renowned philanthropist Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, the Second Baronet donated the one lakh rupees and the main building of the Deccan College was built in Neo-Gothic style. On 23^rd March 1868, the College commenced its functioning from the new campus. In the year 1934, British Government locked down the College but on August 17, 1939 after 5 years the Bombay High Court passed an order of reopening the College. The institute is doing well and achieved excellence in teaching and research. 5^th March 1990 is the golden day in the history Deccan College on that day the H.R.D. Ministry, Government of India, granted the status of a Deemed University. From June 1, 1994 the college commenced its functioning as Deemed University. The Deemed University is wholly funded by the State Government. There are three departments in the Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute viz. Archaeology Department, Linguistics Departments and Sanskrit and Lexicography Department. Pune is the 18^th largest metropolis in India and 2^nd largest in the state of Maharashtra. Pune is well connected by Air, Rail and Roads. Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute offers postgraduate and PhD programmes to the students. Some of the courses offered by the university are M.A. Archaeology, M.A. Lingustics, M.A. Sanskrit & Lexicography, Ph.D Lingustics, Ph.D Sanskrit & Lexicography and Diploma in Archaeology. There are some facilities provided by the Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute to the students. Some of the facilities provided by the college to the students are Library, Museum, Hostel Facility, Mess, Gymkhana and many more.
