Arvind Panagariya born in India on September 30, 1952, is an Indian- American Economist. At Columbia University, Arvind is a professor of economics, who also worked as Vice-Chairman of the Government of India think-tank NITI Aayog for the period of January 2015 to August 2017. Previously Panagariya at the Asian Development Bank was a Chief Economist. Earlier also Arvind used to be the professor of economics at the University of Maryland at College Park. Previously he has worked for the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organisation and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. He has done his PhD in Economics from Princeton University.
Arvind is also a Writer and Editor, he has written or edited over ten books. India: The Emerging Giant published in March 2008, is his recently written book. His book was praised by Fareed Zakaria, and it was stated as ‘ Definitive book on the Indian Economy. On the show named Bloomberg TV India, Arvind has appeared on the show, the name of the show was “Transforming India with Arvind Panagriya”. By the National Institution for Transforming India Aayog, which is a replacement of the Planning Commission, he was appointed as the Vice Chairman on 5th January 2015. Arvind also heads the data of the Socio-Economic and Caste Census 2011. As Columbia University didn’t extend his leave beyond 31st August 2017, he gave his resignation as the Vice Chairman to the Niti Aayog. He has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan Award.
